4 ways to celebrate Environment Day at home

  • June 5, 2021

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year to encourage people to protect the environment. This celebration comes with a promise to build awareness. The 3R’s Reusing, Reducing, and Recycling are buzzwords for a sustainable future. Amidst this lockdown one thing we have realized is how frail life is and how important it is to listen to mother nature. This day as we celebrate World Environment Day behind closed doors let us see how we can do our bit to preserve and sustain.

Here are 4 simple ways you can do to preserve and sustain.

Growing your veggies in your home

Growing vegetables in your homes doesn’t just help the environment but it also saves your money and health. Consuming organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best things you can do to stay healthy. Besides, you are reducing the risk of eating synthesized vegetables that contain harmful chemicals. It could be from a small pot to a big garden.

Composting food scraps

Composting is a mixture of ingredients used to fertilize and improve the soil. Compositing can be done in your homes. if you stay in a society/colony it can be done collectively. The soil produced is rich in minerals for organic and healthy growth of vegetables and can also be a source of income on a larger scale.

How to compost??

  •   Choose a container
  • Add brown and green organic materials like fruit and vegetable scraps, teabags, fallen leaves, eggshells, coffee grounds, and filters.
  • Keep the compost moist. Moisture helps with the breakdown of organic matter.
  • Occasionally turn your compost to provide air circulation
  • After a while, the compost will get warm
  • And when the compost looks all dark with no hint of waste, your compost is ready.

Upcycle your old clothes

Some of us might be unaware that certain materials used in clothing involve dangerous chemicals which affect soil and water as these get into soil and water which we consume after our health. So rather than buying new clothes and adding to the pile maybe you could Upcycle them? Its advantages are its economical, sustainable and fun

Need some ideas? Here you go !!

  •  You can upcycle your faded jeans into shorts.
  •  Turn your Kurtis into handkerchiefs and masks.
  • Create headbands, scrunchies
  • Dresses from sarees
  • Create newer designs with ethnic prints

Just go wild with your imagination.

Reuse old items

Use your creativity and reuse old items. It’s high time we stop littering the environment and think of recycling things. 70% of the waste can be recycled into new materials.

Things you can recycle your old material into

  • Use bottles and buckets as pots and vase
  • Make envelopes out of newspapers
  •  Tops into pillowcases.

Over the years we have seen a shift of climate issues and the need for being more aware about what is happening to our planet. The best we can do is by making small efforts .So on this occasion  which one of these are you going to do first?
